DAY ONE

ADVANCED TECHNIQUES MASTER CLASS

Hands free and deep tissue techniques

This advanced master class will focus on how to use techniques to provide deeper, more effective massages, whilst looking after the most important piece of equipment - YOU! These techniques will be invaluable for a long and sustained career.  Ruth will help you learn how to use your body weight effectively and safely.
You will get expert one-to-one guidance on hands-free and deep tissue techniques, using forearms, elbows and soft fists whilst incorporating mobilisations. We will also begin looking at postural observations, and how to address muscular imbalance.  These skills will be an on-going theme throughout the course.

KEY FOCUS POINTS
•    Advanced hands free techniques
•    Advanced deep tissue techniques
•    Good body practice
•    Postural assessment
•    MET’s and neuromuscular techniques including trigger point therapy, myofascial release and positional release techniques
•    Mobilisations
•    Palpation skills
•    Dynamic stretching
KEY FOCUS AREAS
•    Muscles involved in stability and posture of the spine

DAY TWO

ADVANCED TECHNIQUES FOR HIPS AND LEGS

It is a well known fact that muscular imbalance can cause knee, hip and lower back pain. This workshop will cover advanced soft tissue techniques for the hip and legs, looking at the anatomy of muscles involved in stabilisation and how to recognise common knee and hip dysfunction, including patella tracking which can be the cause of knee pain. Ruth will also show how you can use your knowledge to address the balance in the pelvis and ease discomfort in the SI joints and groin.

KEY FOCUS POINTS
•    A&P
•    Postural assessment
•    MET’s and neuromuscular techniques including trigger point therapy, myofascial release and positional release techniques
•    Mobilisations
•    Dynamic stretching
KEY FOCUS AREAS
•    Muscles involved in stability and alignment of the pelvis
•    Muscles involved in the stability and alignment of the knee

DAY THREE

ADVANCED TECHNIQUES FOR THE UPPER BOD

INCLUDING side lying techniques and MASSAGE for pregnant ladies

Today Ruth will demonstrate how we can help our clients to achieve good posture and range of motion through the upper thoracic and cervical areas.  You will learn techniques to open these areas with spinal mobilisations and stretches, access deeper muscles in the shoulder girdle, and gain a greater range of movement for shoulder mobilisations.  There will be a focus on shoulder alignment in relation to posture and repetitive use.
Working in sidelying is greatly rewarding, for both the client and the therapist.  Throughout the workshop there will be a strong emphasis on working in a sidelying position and how to take a three dimensional approach to the body.

Massaging pregnant clients

During this part of the course, we will also take some time to discuss our pregnant clients throughout their journey from pre to post natal. This is often an area that therapists lack experience with and so we will look at maximising your existing skills and building new skills to increase your confidence in this area. Ruth will cover precautions and contraindications, looking at when we can work in pregnancy and which techniques we can use. As therapists we know we can bring relief to all of our clients but we always want to work safely and with a holistic approach.

KEY FOCUS POINTS
•    Sidelying techniques and flow
•    Pre and post natal techniques
•    A&P
•    Postural assessment
•    MET’s and neuromuscular techniques including trigger point therapy, myofascial release and positional release techniques
•    Mobilisations
•    Dynamic stretching
KEY FOCUS AREAS
•    Muscles involved in stability of the shoulder
•    How posture affects this stability
•    Common injuries from repetitive use and poor alignment

DAY FOUR

THAI MASSAGE TECHNIQUES FOR THE TABLE
Today you will learn something unique and invaluable for your toolbox! Students are often amazed at how effective Thai massage techniques are and how good they feel to give and receive.  You will learn mobilisations and stretches adapted from traditional Thai massage, which are very effective for opening joints, lengthening muscles and releasing blocked energy – which is often the cause of pain.
This workshop will give you some fantastic skills to take away and incorporate into your massages whilst still using a massage table.

KEY FOCUS POINTS
•    Thai massage techniques
•    Mobilisations
•    Dynamic stretching
•    METs
KEY FOCUS AREAS
•    Full body

DAY FIVE

THE ‘WOW” FACTOR – HANDS, FEET, FACE AND NECK
These additional areas can really offer the ‘Wow’ factor in our treatments. Enabling us to offer a holistic approach, whilst encouraging our clients to come back for more!
Whilst working these areas can be incredibly relaxing, and really completes a massage, it is often an area we often feel least confident in or just don’t feel we have the time for.

The workshop will be split into 3 sessions:
1.    Lower leg and foot
2.    Forearm and hands
3.    Neck, face and head

Lower Leg and Foot

The feet are quite literally the foundation of support for the alignment of our body. Not only that, but they also absorb shock, transfer force and provide the spring in our step. Our foot foundation is built on three arches and any imbalance of the arches of the feet, will affect knees, pelvis, lower back and then up into the shoulder girdle and neck.
We will look at the fundamental anatomy of the foot and lower leg. The three arches and the main muscles involved with stability, support and providing a firm foundation for our body. We will use postural assessments to observe how the feet affect the tracking of our body.

Forearm and Hands

Here we will look at the fundamental anatomy of the hand and forearm. Focusing on wrist and finger extensors/flexors. Over this session you will look at how tension and overuse of the wrist extensors can be the cause of tennis elbow and how overuse and tension in the wrist flexors can cause inflammation in the medial epicondyle of the elbow (golfers elbow).
We will cover deep tissue and active release techniques to lengthen and release these muscles, learning along the way massage and mobilisation techniques for the hands, to relieve tension and aching. This can be caused by overuse and gripping, ie cycling, skiing, computer work.

Neck, Face and Head

To finish this session and to end the week, we will spend time on some simple yet effective techniques for releasing tension in the neck, face and head. We will look at neck posture and mobility. With the key focus on MET's, massage and gentle mobilisations to release tension and increase mobility here.
Massage and myofascial techniques of key points in the face and head will help relieve headaches, tension in the jaw and offer overall relaxation to balance both body and mind.

KEY FOCUS POINTS
•    A&P
•    Postural assessment
•    MET’s and neuromuscular techniques including trigger point therapy, myofascial release and positional release techniques
